A Brief Insight to the Auto Insurance Rules and Coverage in Hawaii

Mainly there are three kinds of liability coverage provided by Hawaii Auto insurance companies. The owner of the insurance policy would be provided with bodily injury liability, property damage liability, and personal injury protection. It protects you against damage claims as well as helps you cope with your medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. However, having a personal injury protection (PIP), is a must in Hawaii.

Minimum Coverage: In Hawaii, the minimum car insurance coverage is $25000. This remains the same for injury during an accident. For all kinds of accidents the amount comes out to be $50000. For the property damage, the amount comes out to be $25000.

You are required by law to have certain minimum level of coverage:

Mandatory Coverage Minimum Requirement
Bodily Injury Liability (BI): When you are at fault in an accident, pays for accidental injury to or the death of another driver, the other driver's passengers, passengers in your car, and pedestrians.

$25,000 per person

$50,000per accident

Property Damage (PD): When you are at fault in an accident, pays for the repair or replacement of other people's cars or property. $25,000 per accident

Medical payments, PIP, and no-fault coverage

If you meet with an accident, medical payments help you and your passengers get treated through medical payments (Med Pay) coverage. Hawaii has its two optional coverage areas such as personal injury protection (PIP) and "no-fault" coverage not mandatory for every state. Payments for lost wages and childcare also forms a part of the insurance plans in this state.

Hawaii Auto Insurance Law

In Hawaii, the auto insurance policies pay you back for the damage that you receive during an accident regardless of whosoever is at fault. But at the same time, legal rights are limited for those who pose serious damage to person or the property.

Mandatory Requirements:
According to the state law it is mandatory for a driver to be able to produce the insurance card or its evidences whenever required. The auto insurance on the other hand can protect you financially as well.

In accordance with Hawaii auto insurance law, other acceptable documents to prove insurance include:

1. A temporary insurance card issued by the insurer.
2. A premium receipt or insurance binder issued by the motorist's insurance agent.
3. The current declarations page of a liability insurance policy.
4. The actual liability insurance policy issued for the vehicle.
5. A certificate of liability insurance policy issued by either the insurer or an authorized agent.
6. Proof of purchase of a motor vehicle with the previous 60 days and a valid insurance card issued for the motor vehicle replaced by such purchase. The proof of purchase is to be a copy of the bill of sale if the vehicle is a pre-1975 year model, or the owner's permit (yellow) copy of the application for certificate of title for a 1975 and subsequent year model vehicle.
7. A copy of the rental agreement when renting a motor vehicle, which specifies the insurance coverage.

How Auto Insurance Rates Are Determined in Hawaii

In Hawaii, the method of computing the premium rates of auto insurance is very much like other states. The rate of total driver of the state is computed together, and an average is calculated after that. This also includes settlement and legal fees. The cost is then divided among the drivers the amount is not equal though. The rest depends upon the driving record, your age, and the place where you live and the type of vehicle you drive.
